Next Stop: Organization Station
When it comes to my career, creating itineraries, or my daily agenda, I consider myself an all-star in the organization department. However, if you take a peek in my closet - it’s a completely different story! I have always loved clothes and honestly, the walk-in closet is why I chose the apartment I did. It’s a huge space, so naturally it started acting as a storage unit for seasonal decor, extra pillows, etc. and not going to lie, it was starting to get a little out of hand.
I had bought The Home Edit book years ago essentially just for a cute addition to my coffee table. Best friends, Joanna and Clea, the writers and owners of The Home Edit, became famous all from their social media account on Instagram. Get Organized With the Home Edit just released on Netflix on September 9th and after just one episode, I was inspired to take on my first home edit challenge!
These women are the organizational geniuses and through just four steps: Edit, Categorize, Contain, Organize, they have helped me turn my closet into one of my favorite rooms!
Step #1:Edit
Now, editing might be the most time consuming and difficult step, but it’s crucial if you want to declutter and maximize your space. It was super therapeutic to clear out items that I no longer wear to free up extra space in my closet for any new purchases for this fall season :)
Step #2: Categorize
Zone (n) : A section of an area or territory established for a specific purpose.
Designate different zones in your space. Grouping like items together makes it way easier to find what you are looking for and motivates you to put it back in its home.
Step #3: Contain
Clear storage is your best friend. Say it again.
What I’ve learned in this process, is that if I can’t see it in my closet, it does not exist. The easy fix for this is to purchase clear containers to store your items. The Home Edit loves to use acrylic product from The Container Store, however, this can get very expensive if you are on a tight budget. I purchased my larger product at TCS (most items on sale) and smaller product at HomeGoods. One thing I do recommend when shopping at TCS, is joining the free “POP Rewards” program at checkout, that way you can receive discounts and are notified when items go on sale - oh, how I love a good bargain! The product that I bought for my closet are acrylic drawers, stacking t-shirt bins, shoe dividers (to act as clutch dividers), and organization for accessories.
Labels for the win!
The Container Store sells these amazing pre-printed labels written in Clea’s cursive handwriting. If you don’t see the labels that you need in the pre-made packs, there is also the option to order custom-made labels on their website. To let you in on a little secret, if you purchase The Home Edit book, there is a set of starter labels in the back cover - you’re welcome! Once I started labeling, I literally could not stop, and now my boyfriend thinks I have lost it.
Step# 4: Organize
Rainbow & Denim Bar all day, everyday.
ROYGBIV is a simple and visually appealing way to arrange your items. Rainbowing your pretty things makes the placement look intentional - I think Clea would approve!
A “Denim Bar”, as the Home Edit gals call it, gives your closet the feel that you are shopping in a store. Arrange those puppies by the shade of jean & voilà!
